Funds and Charities

What is the Salesian Hardship Fund?

The Hardship Fund is a source of financial help available to Salesian students. The aim of the fund is to help students who have difficulties in paying for:

1.    Uniform, shoes or sports kit
2.    Equipment (for example ingredients for cookery classes)
3.    Exceptional travel expenses to/from school
4.    Curriculum trips and visits

Payments from the fund are discretionary and the school has no obligation to make them. Payments are a grant not a loan and do not need to be repaid.

Salesian has a limited budget so these grants are small and only intended for a limited number of students. Parents in financial difficulties should take advice from Government agencies or from professionals such as social workers or debt counsellors.

Who is Eligible?

  • Students in receipt of free school meals
  • Students in low income families. This will normally be families with a low household income or families who are claiming Universal Credit or other means tested benefits.
  • Students with disabilities
  • Students who are or have been in care

Even if these conditions are not met, there is discretion to allow other cases to be met from the hardship fund if it is considered a good reason.

Salesian may request recent proof of benefits if the student is not already registered for Free School Meals.

How to apply to the Hardship Fund

Please email Mrs Mourelle (cmourelle@salesian.surrey.sch.uk) to enquire about what support is available. The enquiry will be strictly confidential and will be considered individually. If the request is specifically about trips, please email Mrs Baumgart (hbaumgart@salesian.surrey.sch.uk)

It is important to note that students and parents cannot appeal a decision not to award a hardship grant as the school’s decision is final however we will endeavour to help where we can.

The challenges faced by schools in terms of funding are well documented and Salesian is no exception. We are constantly striving to improve our facilities at the School and College to deliver an excellent educational experience for all our young people.

The Salesian School Development Fund is a ring-fenced, stand-alone fund held by the School Governors and used to support the very best learning and teaching for your child in well-resourced classrooms. In recent years the fund has significantly supported the delivery of the new Sports Hall at Guildford Road and the new classroom block at Highfield Road.

The School are now actively fundraising for a replacement to the St Patricks building to include much needed modern teaching spaces for our Music department and general learning, performance and break out facilities to benefit all our students.

We regard all donations as the “children’s money” and I can assure you that any contribution will help ensure that your child has the very best environment and facilities in which to learn and develop. The money that you gift us will make a huge difference to the students at the school and is kept separate from day-to-day expenditure on staffing and resource and I hope you may wish to be a regular contributor to the fund.

If you are in a position to contribute, the easiest way to make either a one-off or a regular monthly/quarterly contribution is through our dedicated donation page hosted by CAF Donate:

Donate to Salesian School Development Fund

If you are a UK taxpayer, using this link will also enable us to automatically claim Gift Aid relief so that we can reclaim the basic rate of tax on your donation(s). This means that the School receives an additional 25% on top your donation(s), at no additional cost to yourself.

Alternatively, you can make a one-off payment or set up a standing order using the below bank details. Please reference your standing order with the year you child would have been in Year 7 at Salesian (even if they started after year 7) and your child’s surname. So for students in current Year 7 this would be, for example, 25Gower

Chair of Governors

In Latin, Magnificat means, ‘my soul magnifies the Lord' and is taken from the Gospel of Luke and is the name of the hymn spoken by Mary when she is visited by her cousin, Elizabeth. It is, perhaps, the most ancient of Christian hymns and the earliest Marian hymn within the whole of Christianity.

Rebecca celebrated her faith through music, both in and out of school and she found great strength from her love and devotion to Mary. It is because of this that it seems only fitting that this fund be named after one of her favourite hymns of praise.

The Magnificat Fund will endeavour to magnify Rebecca's legacy by ensuring the Salesian community will continue to be blessed by her love of music. Rebecca sought to teach and inspire all of her students so any donations received will go towards supporting the continued great work in the music department and our most vulnerable students so they continue to be enriched by music.
