Physical Education

Head of Department: Ms Charlotte Gallagher

A Level PE further develops the academic aspect of the subject through a number of sections including a chance to develop knowledge of anatomy and physiology. It also focuses on two practical areas, allowing the pupil to understand the principles of coaching and training.

At A Level, we explore three key topics over two years:

  • Introduction to PE: Socio-cultural Studies, Anatomy and Physiology, Acquiring Movement Skills
  • Principles and concepts: Historical Studies, Exercise Physiology and Psychology.
  • Practical Skills: practical activities, officiating, coaching and leading.

Pupils will have the opportunity to look at the origins of Physical Education and popular sport whilst building on GCSE knowledge of the body systems to understand how the body responds to exercise.

We follow the OCR specification. Tuition combines classroom learning with some physical activity in a variety of sports. Assessment includes written examinations practical assessment in two sports in year 1 and one sport in year 2.

Pupils also have the opportunity to take part in individual and team sports during enrichment on Wednesday afternoons. Choices include; Football, Rugby, Netball, Dodgeball, Hockey, Rowing and Fitness.

For more information, including admission criteria, see the Sixth Form Options booklet.
