Modern Foreign Languages

Head of Department: Miss Cristina Mourelle

A Level French / Spanish / Italian

There are simply no limits to the possibilities open to you if you incorporate languages into your studies. Languages at A-level offer you the fantastic opportunity to work towards becoming a fluent linguist.

These courses are designed to develop and assess listening, reading, writing and speaking skills while giving students a greater understanding of other cultures.  Within the AS and A2 course we cover the following topic areas:

  • Youth Culture & Concerns (e.g. family relationships, alcohol, smoking, mobile phones, music, fashion )
  • Lifestyle and Health (e.g. sport, keeping fit & healthy, Mediterranean food, unhealthy living: tobacco & drugs)
  • Education (e.g. education systems, schooling and higher education; the world of work; women in the workplace & unemployment)
  • The world around us (tourism, environment; weather and climate change; renewable energy)

The teaching combines extensive written and spoken practice, including a 20-30-minute meeting each week with a foreign language assistant (a native speaker) conducted entirely in the chosen language.

We follow the Edexcel specification. Both AS and A2 is assessed through a combination of an  internally assessed speaking exam (30%) and either Unit 2 (AS) and Unit 4 (A2) (70%)

At AS, listening, reading and writing are assessed within the topic areas and at A2, the focus is on a written translation, a discursive essay and a Research Based Essay on either a chosen novel/film or history unit.

For more information, including admission criteria, see the Sixth Form Options booklet.
