The 2016 Dieppe Trip in June was a fun filled experience giving us the chance to sample French culture first hand in Normandy in the North of France.
We departed Guildford Road by coach on Friday at 9 a.m. to get our Euro Tunnel Shuttle to France from Folkstone. It was amazing how quick it took to get from England to France, suddenly we emerged in Calais and we were driving on the right, with road signs in French and big green open spaces - we were in France!!
We began our journey to the Château in Criel- sur-mer just outside of Dieppe but first there was time for a stop in the Nausica Acquarium in Boulogne where we were able to see an amazing variety of sea life ranging from turtles, sharks to even clown fish ha ha!!
We arrived in the beautiful Château at 6pm and we got settled into our gorgeous surroundings. We had a lovely French meal at 7.30, complete with lots of local cheese of course for dessert, and then the instructors had teams competing against each other in the "scrapheap challenge" before going to bed for a well-earned rest.
On Saturday morning, after some croissants and a traditional French breakfast, we headed for the main town of Dieppe. The weather was warm and we were treated to a tour of this port town before hitting the thriving French market where we purchased all sorts of foods from smelly cheeses to massive water melons! The group enjoyed lunch on the beach before going back to the Château for some more games and a bit of a rest. In the evening we visited the beautiful beach of Criel-sur-mer which is just 15 minutes walk from the château and we enjoyed a little group guitar sing song in French and English!
Sunday morning saw us visit the historic town of Rouen where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake! This grizzly fact aside we were able to enjoy the shops in Rouen and also the amazing cathedral. Some of us were brave enough to venture into the local restaurants and cafés and order some food and drinks in French! The evening consisted of more fun and games at the château not to mention some frogs' legs and snails for dinner!
On Monday we departed from the château tired but happy. After a brief stop in the Cité Europe hypermarché in Calais we were back in England in a flash by way of the tunnel! In summary, we all had a super trip to France and can't wait to go back soon!
