SalesianSchoolNewsletterApril201439Wesetoffatroughly10amaccompaniedbyateacher.Theteachergaveusreassuranceuntiltheymadeamistakenonamesmentioned.Usingourmapsandcompasswefollowedtheco-ordinatestoeachcheckpoints.Atthecheckpointswewereabletofindouthowtheothergroupsweregettingon.Groupswereexperiencingdifficultiesintheirmapreadingskillsandaddingextraunnecessarykilometrestotheirjourney.Bymiddaythesunwasbeaminganditwas20degreesmostofuswerewalkingaroundint-shirts.Westoppedoffforlunchinamiddleofafieldwestopforhalfanhourwhichwasawelcomedbreakandahugereliefonmyshoulders.WithaboutaquarterofthejourneytogotheteachersleftuswhenwehadtotrekupBoxHillwhichwasntaneasytaskthemusclesinourlegswereshakingasweclimbedupthehillpassingotherstudentsthatweregaspingforwatertotheamusementofothersWewerejustfocusandknewwehadtogettothetopwithoutstopping.OnreachingthetopofBoxHillitwasastraightpathtothecampsite.Aswesawourcampsitemyteamweresodesperatetogettherethatweallgotaburstofadrenalinandsprintedthefinal50meters.Wewerethentoldtoputupourtentsinadesignatedareawithotherstudentsarrivingbetween5pmand7pm.Onceourtentwasupwehelpedotherswiththeirtentsthenhuddledroundtomakedinner.Wehadtoplannedourmealandbringlightingredientthatwouldnotgooffandeasytocookthatgaveusenergyaswestillhadawalkinthemorning.Wecookedpastainatomatosaucewithchickenbits.Oncedinnerwasoverwetidiedupwewerefreetorelax.Weweretoldtogotobedat9.30pmwheneveryonewastuckupintheirsleepingbagsthewholecampsitesunghappybirthdaytoTomDoran.Afteracoldnightsleepwewereallwokenat7amachingbutkeentogetthenextdaysfewhoursoutoftheway.Wesetoffafterawell-deserved39 SalesianSchoolNewsletterApril201441Onthe5thofMarch2014tenluckystudentswenttovisitoneofBritainstopuniversitiestogaininsightintothebenefitsofstudyinginOxbridge.AtfirstOxfordstereotypeswereaddressedbyanenthusiasticspeakerandwebegantounderstandthatnotonlyisOxfordavibrantanddiverseplaceforpeoplefromallbackgroundstolearnbutitalsoofferssomeofthebesteducationalsystemssuchastutorialswhereyouaretaughtinsmallgroupsorevenonetoonebytheleadingworldexpertinyoursubject.FurthermoreitwasevidentthatyoudontneedtobeageniusorsomeoneraisedinamansiontostudyatOxfordthetutorsaresimplylookingforpeoplewithtalentandenthusiasmfortheircourse.TheimportanceofGCSEsandAlevelswasalsoaddressedandithasinspiredandmotivatedallofustostriveandachievewellinthoseexams.OneofthebestpartsofthetripwasspeakingtosomeundergraduatesandgettingatourofBrasenosecollegewhichreallymadeusallawareoftheworkloadandtimemanagementwhichcomeshandinhandwiththewackycollegetraditionsandthecountlesssocietiesandclubsitwasparticularlyinterestingtohearaboutthechocolateeatingclubButoverallthebestpartoftheexperiencewasgettingtounderstandthatOxfordisnotjustaposhuniversitywhichisimpossibletogetintobutaschooldedicatedtoensurethatallstudentsgetthemostoutofuniversityandonewhichwillacceptanyonethatistrulydedicatedtowhattheywanttostudy.JessDeSuza SalesianSchoolNewsletterApril201443measuretheheightofamountainwhileanotheraskedhowmanymole-culestherewereinaglassofwater.OverallwehadareallygoodtimeandallleftfeelingmotivatedtoapplytoOxfordandCambridge.AmyMcCormickYear12UniversityFairatSirWilliamPerkinsAnumberofyear12studentswerefortunateenoughtoattendaUniver-sityFaironthe26THFebruaryatSirWilliamPerkinsSchool.Therewere47HigherEducationInstitutionandcommunityprojectorganisationsoffer-inglotsofadviceandinformationaboutwhattheirestablishmentcanoffer.Therewereanumberofmasterclassesforthestudentstoattendonper-sonalstatementsstudentfinanceandOxbridgeapplicationswhichwererunbythevisitinguniversitiesandwereappreciatedbythestudentsandparentswhichattended.ItwasagreatopportunityforthestudentstostarttothinkaboutthedifferentopportunitiesavailabletothemoncetheyhaveleftSalesian.OutreachThesixthformstudentswereextremelyfortunatetoparticipateinanassemblydeliveredbySisterConniefromtheSalesianOutreachProject.SisterConnietalkedtothestudentsabouttheopportunitiesavailabletoChristianstudentsthroughURSpacewhichofferstheprospectofaGAPyearforstudentstoliveandworkinaSalesianChristinacommunitybasedinGlasgow.Throughtheprogrammestudentsareabletoworkaspartofanoutreachprogrammegoingintoschoolsandparishestohelpchildrenconnectwiththeirfaith.PastparticipantsBeckyandEdithexplainedhowtheprogrammeallowedthemtoreallyexploretheircreativesidesinrunningactivitiesaimedatchildrenaswellastheenrichingexperienceofhavingthechancetoreflectupontheirownspiritualjourneys.Allinallitwasanhighlyengagingsessionthatremindedusallofhowfor-tunatewearetobepartofaGlobalSalesiancommunity.43 44SalesianSchoolNewsletterApril2014PlanitgetplanningInSeptember2013agroupofambitiousYear12studentsbeganthejourneytoplanningsettingupandrunningtheirowncompany.ItstartedoffwitheachmemberattendinganinterviewwithourlinkteacherMrsOFarrellandbusinessadvisorPhilLucasGavinJonesLtdthathelpedusdecidewhowasmostsuitedtoeachpositionwithinthecompany.Nextwaspossiblythemostchallengingpart-devisinganinnovativenewanduniqueproduct.AftermuchdebateanddeliberationwedecidedonamagneticorganiserwhichwenamedPlanit.Ourproductcomprisesofamagneticstripwithdaysoftheweekonandindividualmagnetictileswithdifferentsymbolsthatrepresentavarietyofactivitiesforexampleafootballforafootballsessionandasaxophoneforamusiclesson.Itsaimistomakefamilylifealittleeasierwithchildrenbeingabletoseewhattheyhaveintheweekaheadaswellasencouragingthemtobemoreactive.Asacompanywefeelwehavebeenverysuccessfulinnotonlythecrea-tionmarketingandsellingofourproductbutalsowiththeefficientrunningofourbusiness.Wehadaclearideaofourtargetmarketandthereforemouldedourproducttoappealtowardsparentsandchildrenalike.InitialfeedbackwasverypositivenumerousparentsshowedrealinterestinourproductideabeforewehadevenproducedafinaldesignAfterthathadbeenproducedwestartedtolookforasupplier.WefoundacompanycalledBluePandawhowerewillingtomanufactureourdesignsoweordered100units.Todatewehavesoldover37unitsandaimtocon-tinuetradinguntilwehavesoldallourstock.WewillthenbeinapositiontopayshareholdersbackandstillpayourselvesawageWewereverypleasedtobeawardedanhonourablementionattheYoungEnterpriseHalf-YearFestivalforbesttradestand.Thisspurredusonevenmoreandweworkedincrediblyhardforthefinal.Wecreatedacompanyreportre-designedourtradestandmadeavideoadvertandonWednes-daythe26thMarchwepresentedthecompanytoover200people.Our
