In July 2016, 11 year 12 students embarked upon a volunteering trip to Thailand, accompanied by Miss Murdoch and Mrs Elmer. Working with the Father Ray Foundation, a Christian organisation created by Father Ray in 1974 in a bid to help the disadvantaged children of Pattaya in Thailand. Today, the foundation caters for the needs of over 900 orphaned, abused and disadvantaged children and students with disabilities - they never turn a child in need away.
During our time there, our students worked closely with the children in the day care centre (aged 1-3) and in the special needs centre, among others. Previous Salesian donations have been spent on furnishing a room in the newly built special needs centre as well as going towards the cost of keeping the children. Our students were responsible for planning and delivering sessions with these children, who do not speak any English at all. This was a challenge, but a challenge which they all stepped up to.
As a result of our fundraising during the last year, Salesian has raised approximately £900 to donate to the Fr Ray Foundation which will be used to cover essentials such as paying for food and electricity! Whilst it was not an easy trip for the students as they were dealing with some children whose situations had previously been unimaginable for our students making it very emotional, they made a world of difference to the children with their enthusiasm and positive outlook.
